Open Records & FOIA Requests
Transparency is the foundation of accountability. Under the Oklahoma Open Records Act (Title 51, Section 24A), school district financial records, emails, contracts, and policy documents are public property. You have the right to access them.
How to File a Request
- Be Specific: Instead of "all emails," request "all emails between Superintendent X and Vendor Y from Jan 1-30, 2024."
- Put It in Writing: Send your request to the designated "Open Records Officer" (often the Superintendent or PR Director) via email.
- Include "Open Records Act": Explicitly cite the Oklahoma Open Records Act.
- Set a Deadline: While the law says "prompt, reasonable access," it helps to ask for a response within 10 business days.
What is NOT Public?
- Student Records: Individual student data is protected by FERPA.
- Personnel Evaluations: Some teacher evaluations are confidential.
- Attorney-Client Privilege: Legal advice received by the board.
